It's amazing. No. not uncrustables, DVR, or the shake weight. It's amazing how quickly we forgot how to be parents. Parents of a newborn, that is. Let me explain. when Kylie was born our world was ROCKED, everything was crazy, we didn't know what to do with the wiggling little thing, and somedays we weren't even sure which way was up. As luck would have it, however, we soon learned the Jedi ways of child rearing and Kylie survived to be a toddler. Flash forward. Cooper Marshall arrives and we harness our inner "infant whisperer powers" and ride off in to the proverbial perfect parenting sunset. WRONG! I found it amusing how quickly we, got peed on (2 hours in), forgot to change his diaper...and ended up with a soaked outfit, looked like we were wrastling a greased pig while trying to dress him in a sleep sack (not even a real outfit), couldn't remember how to take care of that "cord thing", and lost the art of bathing a newborn. It fascinates me that the book we wrote, you know, "Rearing an infant with elegance and grace " has yet to reach Best Seller status. :-)
Since yesterday was father's day I had to reflect on some of my initial feelings with two kids. Besides the above mentioned escapades, I am wowed each and everyday by the miracle of life. It blows me away to watch our little guy wiggle, move, open his eyes, and even sleep. I feel so blessed to have such a wonderful toddler (Yesterday she said "Happy Father's Day. I love you") and a sweet little infant. It still makes me feel old though to admit that I am the father of 2 children. I'm sure it will settle....either that or my baby brain will kick in (Don't judge, dad's can have it too) and I'll just forget I have two.
Milestones yet to be achieved: Cooper will actually look at me instead of the ceiling fan above my head and I will get to hold him longer than 5 minutes before he's ready to nurse again (:-) only joking, we have actually had some pretty good naps together so far)
We're off. Off to shoot some stuff, trudge through the mud, and terrorize the neighborhood like only a father and son can.
More to come soon,
Craig
