Kylie May's Super Fun Play Day 176

What did Kylie May do today??? It can be summed up in one word, PLAY. She played with Michelle (our next door neighbor who is about 4 months old), she played with Andre (the little boy my parents babysat for the past couple years, 2 years old), she played in the kiddy pool, she played in the big swimming pool, she played at our house and at Mimi and Papa's. Miss May was a busy girl and her mommy documented almost every moment. Hope you enjoy the photos :o) these are just a few from the 167 I took today. At least I am getting some good use out of my camera.

More to come soon,
Natalie

Kylie May's 3 Nap Day 175

Just a quick note tonight with highlights from the day. The biggest news is that Kylie took three good naps, two of which she slept on our bed by herself! Yeah! We had another bit of crazy weather this afternoon, this time Kylie and I went out in the warm rain for a few minutes, she was not sure what to think about the rain drops on her head. We also got a new baby carrier today, it is the Ergo. Craig has been wanting one since we first started looking at baby stuff when I was pregnant, he was very excited to finally pick it up today. Kylie also got to spend a little time playing at my parents house with Andre. Andre is having a sleep over with Mimi and Papa and we will get to have more play time tomorrow. Sorry it's so short tonight, trying to get to bed before she wakes :o)

More to come soon,
Natalie

PS. Craig, my dad and his friend Jim worked on our backyard this morning, we are hoping to get power to the carriage house so we can finished the back room and use it for storage or a playroom, thanks to all three guys for all the hard work.

Kylie May and Some Wild Weather Day 174

In Southern California during the end of August the last thing you expect (besides an ice age) is a flash flood/Thunderstorm.  You have to be careful though, because sometimes, it is exactly those things that you least expect that jump up and bite ya! Fortunately, Kylie being the future cub scout that she is, took one smell of the weather and warned us that we should probably head inside. Ok, so I'm not buying that either, but it did just so happen that we had just come inside before our bright blue sky turned black and the clouds turned the faucet on full blast.  It was fun to see Kylie trying to make sense out of all the falling water and wind.  We stood out on our front porch while Kylie shifted her gaze across the rapidly overflowing landscape before us.  She was interested for sure, but impressed?....only mildly.

After the storm slowed, and all our friends rowed in (Outbackers coming over for a fantasy football draft) things really got fun for Missy May.  Why? because we had a house full of people, and if there is one thing that Kylie loves just slightly less than nursing, it's a house full of people.  The real kicker is that the big group included a few babies.  Talk about fun.  One of the little ones was just slightly older than Kylie and we always enjoy seeing babies close to her age.  Watching them do similar developmental activities is one of those little things that you have to be a parent to enjoy (at least that's what other parents have said).

The draft was a hit (Even our friend Jenna joined us via Skype...all the way from Bristol, CT), but in sadder news Kylie only got to stay for about half an hour before it was time to go hang out with grandma Carol for a few hours.  They laughed, they cried, they fell asleep....and then the party was over and Kylie was home.   Just another day filled with smiles and memories.

more to come soon,

-Craig-

She couldn't stand the sight of the rain, knowing that I had just washed the car yesterday

Just talking a little draft strategy before the big event kicked off

We only just discovered that so many people could cram into our little living room....Even Jenna (on the computer) squeezed in for the fantasy draft

Kylie May and a Much Needed Pool Day 173

Sometimes in life the saying is true.  "A picture says a thousand words."  Tonight, since we have some good token "swimming time at great grandmas house" photos, Nat and I will shove off to get some needed rest while the pictures tell the story of all the fun she had today swimming with Uncle Kyle, Auntie Melissa, Nat, and I.

Kylie May's "Are You My Babysitter?" Day 172

I had accidentally fallen asleep while putting Kylie down, I just now woke and my first thought "The blog!" So the plan was executed just about perfectly last night except for one minor hiccup, Grandpa's shift was supposed to be the home stretch, the final 100 meters before the finish line, but at 8:00 mom was not home. That's right, I was still at work. I ended up staying until about 10:30am, I was happy to get a full 12 hours in, but sad to be home so late.  So Kylie's babysitting line up went something like this...Daddy (10:30 - 4:30), Grandma, Grandpa, Melissa (when mommy didn't make it home on time), Mommy, Daddy and uncle Kyle and aunt Melissa (while mommy slept), Mommy and Kyle (while Daddy slept), Kyle (while Mommy fixed dinner and Melissa was at yoga), Melissa and Mommy then Mommy (and she was out). I truly believe "it takes a village to raise a child" or in this case at least 6 adults to watch her for a 24 hour period. What a lucky little girl she is to have so many people willing to take time from their day to play with her :o)

Melissa and Kyle headed out this evening and I took a little time rearranging our bedroom while Kylie slept in the living room. We are trying to find a way to get a CA king bed to fit in our room before we go buy one just to be reminded that when our house was built (1905) CA king beds didn't exist.

One other story I have to tell about today... I hope Craig doesn't mind... and I'm sure he would tell it better but he is at work...so here I go. When I got home this morning I asked Craig how his night went. He started by telling me that Kylie slept well from 10:30 until about 1. At which time he tried to feed her but the bottle was slowing too fast and she was having a hard time (we can't figure out why sometimes this happens) she was frustrated and started to wake more. Then a diaper change and she was wide awake. So the bouncing and walking began, she falls asleep, Craig slowly lays in bed holding her, then does a very gentle roll to the side, Kylie is now resting on the bed, he continues to hold her and she sleeps. That is she sleeps for 5 minutes and wakes up again, so Craig starts over. At about 3:30 am (after multiple failed attempts to get her back to sleep) Craig is exhausted and frustrated, so he does what most dads do in the middle of the night when they are exhausted and frustrated, he punched the bedroom wall! Not just a little tap, oh no, hard enough to make a hole in our drywall. The poor guy said he felt really guilty after he had done it, and of course he turned to Kylie, smiled, picked her up and went right back to being the most patient and amazing daddy ever. I just couldn't believe me ears when he was telling me the story, but sure enough there is a fist sized hole but his side of the bed (needless to say, my rearranging placed our bed in the middle of a big wall making it a little more difficult to punch in the middle of the night).

I hope we can help Kylie figure out this sleeping thing soon. Craig and the support team have one more night to make it through before we leave for vacation, when we get back we are going to see what we can do to create a better routine for our little one so we don't end up needing to patch any more holes in the wall :o)

More to come soon,
Natalie
Yesterday Kylie participated in her first Fantasy Football Draft at Arts house, she was pretty happy about her picks.

Outdoor bath time, can't beat it on a hot day.

Silly face with all that hair calmed down, she looks like a totally different kid.

Happy girl smiling for Uncle Kyle

Kylie May and A New Game Plan 171

So we are on night 2 of 2 with Natalie working at the hospital, so I'm off to lay with the sleeping beauty, but before I jolt, I'll pass along the newest plan of attack for Kylie at night.  We have turned this endeavor into regular ole shift work.  Since she belongs to Nat and I, I took the first (long shift from 10:30 to 4:30).  The fact that I had some help arrive at 4:30 made all the difference in the world (even though it doesn't sound like much).  Grandma Carol watched Kylie from about 4:30 to 6:00 and then Grandpa Gene rounded out the morning by watching Kylie from 6:00 until about 8:30 when Nat got home.   Since Kylie is sleeping now, I will go get my shut eye too, because even though 4:00 comes quickly, it doesn't come that quick when you haven't had any sleep.

Kylie May and a Screaming Birthday 170

We have often said that Kylie is now capable of screaming like a pterodactyl (and a really really loud one at that).  Aunt Melissa recently made this remark to Uncle Graham, to which he had a very reasonable response.  How do you know what a pterodactyl sounds like?   hmmm?....good point uncle Graham.  good point.  So, since I guess we really have no clue what these prehistoric flying creatures sound like, we will now start saying that Kylie can scream like a very very wild Banshee (I am much more familiar with the sound of these mythical creatures).

Why do I bring this up?  Because I said so. sorry just practicing. :-) We went to a party today, for an ex coworker (Outbacker) of mines son's first birthday.  Just like you never know when Walker, Texas Ranger will find you, we also never have any true idea when the banshee might rear her hairy head (We are sure it will happen sometime during our flight to NY in a couple weeks).  It just so happened that during the middle of the party, while everyone was enjoying a nice cake and iced cream dessert, Kylie decided to start talking. I use the term talking loosely.  It's much more comparable to an endearing screeching.  Being the attention seeker that she is, she slowly increases her decibels until she is quite certain that the entire room, no, house, no, neighborhood can hear the story she is telling.   Nat and I, as with most people in the house, can't help but smile at our cute little girl's admirable attempts at learning the weird and unorthodox language we call English.  Inevitably, our smiles elicit a cheek to cheek grin on the little Kylie-o-sauruses face, right before she dives back into a focused story telling that can only be compared to the great Aesop of old.  Keep practicing little one. Keep practicing.

more to come soon,

Craig

p.s. Kylie had a great time playing with all the other kids at the party (Including Outbacker friends Marty and Laura's little 2 year old, Nolan).  Kylie loves other kids.  The first thing she does to every single one she gets close to is reach out and try to grab them.  I can only hope that it's for a big hug.

Kylie May and Her Socialized Day 169

Four scores, and 7 years ago (I have no idea how long that is, but it sounds like a long time)....The beauty of that speech is that you don't actually have to have any clue what it's saying to understand that it is a staple of United States history.  Baseball, apple pie, George Washington, Johnny Carson, 4th of July, the National Anthem....have long been recognized as fundamental representations of American Culture and Its Citizens.  Sure, many of these symbols have been replaced with Google, iEverything, Conan,  Facebook, Madonna, and Yahoo, but the underlying meaning remains.  There are certain practices and behaviors that automatically indoctrinated you into the life of a U.S. Citizen.  Today little miss Kylie took one giant step (not literally, she is still too little) in this initiation process.  She got a Social Security Card!!  We missed a golden opportunity to play the Star Spangled Banner while she signed her documents, but it was a proud day for her nonetheless.  And, actually, now that I think about it more it was a win-win for everyone. She got to feel like she is "one of the gang" and Nat and I now have tax exemptions and an eligible member of the blue collar work force.  Word of advice (From someone who has very loose footing to offer it, mind you): "It's never too early to start building your Social Security portfolio little midget"

I guess after that big event the rest pales in comparison, but we did do some bed shopping today (sometimes the monkey in the middle drives purchasing decisions faster than expected).  She thought it was great fun (and a little confusing) to spend a couple hours this afternoon being tucked into one bed after another.  Ultimately, we found one that brought the biggest smile to her face, and the drowsiest eyes to ours.  I guess now its just a matter of backing in the truck and bringing it home...we might need to wait for a few more Benjamin's to visit, but, hopefully it wont take too long. :-)

more to come soon,

Craig

Kylie May and a Core Strength Day 168

Richard Simmmons, P90X, and the Insanity Workout are all fine and dandy if you want some mild physical activity, but Kylie has developed a routine that truly tests cardiovascular endurance and core strength.  She has named it Aghhhh! Aghhhh!, which loosely translates in English to....actually there is no concrete or loose translation, so we will just call it "Kylie's, Look How Good I Can Sit Up" program.  I have never actually completed the program myself, but watching the way she holds her balance while sitting up is pretty impressive and exhausting.  Since she has proven herself quite capable of sitting up, it comes as no surprise that she loves doing it these days.  I guess we have a real workout junkie on our hands here.  It is fun to watch her play this last week or so because she has become so much more interested in playing while sitting up or lying on her tummy.  She used to hate "tummy time" if it lasted longer than 4 Mississippis (yes.  I was counting).  Now she gets so restless until we either sit her up to play or lay her down on her tummy.  sniffle sniffle:  Kids just grow up so fast. ;-)

Tonight Nat was teaching while Market Night (Downtown Farmer's Market) was going on, so Auntie Melissa and I walked Mylie Kay down in her stroller. (Here comes the part about her workout routine again) The entire 20-25 minute walk she sat straight up in her stroller (without the back support) and just played with her toys and held her tray.  Maybe it was just Melissa and I, but we got a great kick out of seeing this little 5 month old sitting up like she was some kind of big girl or something.  I'm sure someday she will learn that it is fun to sit back and relax while strolling, but that day was not today.  She was in her full, upright, and locked position and we loved it.

Kylie May's Big Play Day 167

Unlike the past restful days, today Kylie was quite the busy bee. We started with a trip to Loma Linda with Emily and Liam to participate in a breastfeeding group. After the group we had a delicious lunch and enjoyed spending some time outside in the sunshine. A quick trip to the bank and all of us headed to visit the great-grandparents. Liam and Kylie had a great time playing with great-grandma and great-grandpa. When we got home Kylie hung out with her daddy before having a wonderful dinner. I had to teach for an hour at the studio tonight so we got Kylie bathed with PJ's on and she and Melissa joined me downtown while I taught. Craig headed to his last day of work for the week, it will be so great to have him home. Kylie went down pretty well tonight, right now she has been asleep for about 2 hours, yeah. Here are a few photos from the day.

More to come soon,
Natalie

P.S. We weighed Kylie at the breastfeeding group she is 15lbs 5oz, wow, good job little one!
Kylie 5 months, Liam 2 months

I walked in to the kitchen when I heard some banging, Kylie was laughing and pounding her hands on the window, so cute.

Kylie loved playing with Cloey at the studio tonight.

Kylie May was so brave today 166

The "meat and potato" part of Kylie's day was very similar to yesterday; good nap time, play time with daddy, dinner and bath and grandma and grandpa's and a slightly later then usual bedtime. The one addition today was a trip to the doctors office for an immunization. We have Kylie on an "alternative" immunization schedule which means we go in every month (instead of every 2 months), but she never gets more then two shots at a time. Both Craig and I were so proud of our little one at the visit today. She fussed a bit when she had to lay down and let out a little cry when she got the shot, but she calmed down as soon as Craig picked her up. She was even smiling and happy by the time we walked out of the office. It was such a big changed from the first time I took her to get her shots. I'm sure not every visit will go so well, but we are so happy it went so smooth today. She had a great evening and is now fast asleep, we will see how she feels tomorrow, but for now it seems like she is doing great.

Kylie has been doing a lot of talking/screaming over the past few days, here is a little video of our little wild one telling us a very interesting story :o)

Kylie May's Mama-Less Morning 165

Mama to the rescue last night, but we ran into a little bit of a mama emergency this morning. We are very short staffed at work and this morning they asked if I was interested in staying over a few hours to help out. Since I didn't go in until 11pm, I thought it was a good idea. I called Craig (twice) and text messaged him so we could talk about it. With no answer, I decided it must be a good sign, they must be fast asleep and me staying a bit longer shouldn't be a problem. Well that was until about 8 am when I got a text from Craig saying he just now got my message and they were running out of milk and he thought I should come home soon! Ahhhhhh, I felt so bad, I was just imagining them at home, Craig telling Kylie "it's ok, stop crying, mama is almost home...maybe she's running a little late, I know your hungry hang in there...where could your mama be, she not usually this late...what? she's working extra hours? when did she decide this? did you hear my phone ring last night?...ahh we are almost out of milk...noooooooooo" By the time I got home Auntie Melissa had come to the rescue and was rocking a sleeping Kylie while Craig caught up on a little rest. The rest of the day was a blur, I tried to sleep on and off, Craig tried to sleep (in prep for going in tonight), Melissa tried to help us out by watching Kylie and bringing her in to nurse, and poor Kylie couldn't figure out whether it was day or night, play time or nap time.

By this afternoon Kylie and I were enjoying some good play time, we read a few books, sang a few songs and practiced sitting up of course. My parents made it back home today (after a little trip to visit my brother in SF) and invited us over for a delicious dinner. After a family dinner, Craig headed to work and we started playing musical Kylie. We each took a turn trying to rock, bounce or sway the little one to sleep. None of it seemed to work, so we thought a bath might help do the trick, wrong! Instead we ended up with a tired and very mad little pumpkin. But some good mommy-and-me nursing time seemed to do the trick and she was out before we walked home.

We have an appointment for shots tomorrow :-( I hope it goes well.
More to come soon,
Natalie
This was a few days ago, Kylie sat in the laundry basket and played with her toys while I cleaned her room.

She really enjoyed pushing her strolled back and forth, she is getting so big!

Kylie May and Her Mama To The Rescue Day 164

Achilles had his heel, Sampson had his hair, Superman had his kryptonite, and I have the hours from 7-9pm.  I learned (not through a 12 step program, but it works there too) that admitting you have a problem is the first move toward recovery.  As much as I like to feel like an able bodied father (I mean my job is to take care of peds all night), I had to call in the big guns for tonight's hangout with Kylie May.  No it wasn't the National Guard (I tried they were busy), and it wasn't Super Nanny (Kylie is a little too young for her work), but I did one better.  I convinced Nat to go in a couple hours late tonight so that she could stay home and help get the little podless pea to bed....without an hour of tears.  There is no backup like miss Kylie May's mama.  To say I'm thankful that she is here is....ummm...yeah. a slight (by slight I mean huge) understatement.

Until the sun started to set (which always evokes a slight state of panic on nights that Nat works), Kylie played and played and played.  She had a great time playing in the kids room during church today.  Her only lament was that at one point every other baby in the room got to sit and eat Cheerios while she just sat on the side watching them.  It was in the midst of all the babies crunching that Nat overheard a faint song coming from Kylie's curled over lips, "One, is the loneliest number...."  Who said babies are oblivious to their surroundings?  Must have been a communist.

Sweet smiley Kylie also found it fascinating to Tango with the Porterville clan this afternoon.  It had been so long since she'd seen any of them (Beach Week, over a month ago) that she was excited to see all their happy smiling megapixel faces.  She has been anxious to show them all how well she sits up...and she did not disappoint. She ended up falling over mid conversation (which really upset her that she couldn't stick the dismount) but we had to reinforce that even Jordan Weiber and Gabby Douglas don't nail every routine.

Some dinner, a bath, and a massage rounded out tonight's festivities, but I'm sure there are some post show fireworks waiting to light up the night at some point.   Lets just hope it's more of a sparkler show than a Fantasmic type performance.

more to come soon,

-Craig-

sorry :-( no photos were clicked in the making of this post, but maybe I can find a video....stay tuned

Kylie May's Parents Night Out Day 163

For just a couple hours this evening, Natalie and I were reminded of what life was like B.K. (before Kylie).  It is only the second date night we've had since our little pumpkin joined this crazy party we call "life", and it was nice to spend it out on the dance floor.  It was only for a couple hours, but it was a lot of fun getting a chance to do what it was we did when we first started dating.....line dancing!  I will admit that we were unable to refrain from checking our phones (with a ransom like intensity) every 17 seconds to make sure that we hadn't missed any updates on our daughter's situation.  It wasn't until about 2 hours into the dance party that the bat signal was illuminated and our parenting costumes came back on.  We raced home to find, Yes, our little one sound asleep in her auntie Melissa's arms.  It never fails.  Baby fusses, parents come home, baby falls asleep before mom and dad even get there.   That, as somebody, somewhere, once said, "is just the way the cookie crumbles".  To that I say, "That is why I only eat soft chewy cookies.  Less crumbs to worry about."  Anyway.  Nat and I were out the door by 7:30 back home by 9:30 happy to have had a little dancing time, but also extremely happy to come home to a precious little girl with the innocent look that only a sleeping baby has.   If our baby watchers can survive the meltdown portion of the night (right before sleep), Nat and I might have to make a habit out of this whole date night thing.   We'll see.

Kylie May and The Mixed Up Sleep Pattern Day 162

Babies sleep? pfghhh! I don't believe it. I think somebody is playing an excessively elaborate April fools joke on us in the middle of August (August already? I can't believe it).  I have actually now uncovered the truth...babies run on batteries.  As long as the batteries have juice, the baby keeps moving.  And, it just so happens that Kylie is operating on batteries powered by nuclear fusion (I guess we better grab a Snickers, because we may not be going anywhere for a while). So, since I have time to reflect I guess that's what I'll do.  Nat and I are in the stage of 1st time parenting where Kylie's sleep pattern and habits pretty much dominates our  parental lives.  We are pretty certain that she needs much more sleep, but it seems like the more we try to encourage sleep the less sleep she actually gets. She falls asleep at 8:00p presumably down for the count, only to wake up bright eyed and ready for a new day by...oh...9:00pm.  She hasn't gotten the "full night" sleep idea yet.  Hmm....if only we could think like a baby this might be easier.

In the end, Nat and I just tell ourselves that it must be a phase she is going through, and someday (possibly when she is grown and gone) we will once again get a little sleep.  In the meantime we are just trying to enjoy all the fun and precious moments this little girl provides in our lives.....and there are plenty.

more to come soon,

-Craig-

p.s.  Kylie had a fun time playing with someone her size today (Gina's son Jackson).  Thanks for the play date!

The lost art of the wet willy is slowly regaining popularity in some circles.

Girl gives boy wet willy. Boy thinks it's cute.  Boy tries to give girl kiss.  Girl has to clearly show that, "Sorry dude. I have boundaries".

Kylie May's Pajamma Day 161

If you didn't know any better you might have thought today was a "staying home from school sick, never got out of my PJ's day" for Kylie. But in fact it was a "never got around to getting dressed, because we can't figure out whether its day of night" for Craig and I. So after an evening of family pizza party time, little Miss May actually slept somewhat well. She woke twice to nurse (better then the usual 4-6 times) but she was wide awake at about 8am, which was right when Craig was finally back to sleep (he woke at 5:15am and was unable to fall back to sleep until 8 :o( that's what working to many nights in a row will do to you).  So Kylie and I got up and took advantage of the beautiful morning and took a walk. It has been in the 100's during the day so we have not been walking like we used to, it was wonderful to get out in the fresh air. By 8:45 it was getting to hot, so we headed home. She was ready for a nap by 9 so we climbed back in to bed with Craig. Her and I finally opening our eyes at noon and Craig didn't get up until 1:30, I think he stayed in his PJ's all day too :o)

So the rest of the day was spent playing around the house. After a fun Skype sessions with auntie Melissa (she comes home from Colorado tomorrow and we are all excited to have her back) I went to work at the studio for about 2 hours while Craig and Kylie got some good father-daughter time in . We had a delicious dinner before Craig headed to work and Kylie headed for the bath tub. Our night time routine is going well, she gets her bath, massage, PJ's and is usually rubbing her eyes and starting to get cranky by the end. Then we feed her and rock her to sleep. This all worked well, she was in bed by just after 7pm, but tossed and turned quite a bit before she finally just woke up and started playing around 8:00. It's like she needs a nap at 7, then play time until about 10. Sure enough tonight (same as last night) she is happy and cooing and gets tired again around 10. So now she is fast asleep and I am just hoping she will sleep in a little late tomorrow. We really want her to get enough sleep, we don't care when she decides to do it, we just want her to get enough.

Tomorrow Jackson is coming to play, yeah! We are eager to see him and Gina, it's been a while.
More to come soon,
Natalie
fabulous bath time hair do, it's getting so long!

Kylie May's Vintage Day 160

It's hard to imagine a 5 month old doing anything vintage, but kids these days (it's so much fun getting to use "parental type sayings") just can't seem to help but humoring trends from the past.  Today Kylie took a page straight from Laura Ingalls Wilder and decided to travel back to her little house on the prairie.  The end result, was a camera filled with megabytes, and a red cheeked baby with a long night gown looking outfit on (the outfit actually belonged to Nat's grandma when she was a baby in 1918....Wow! Laura Ingalls who?).  Why the red cheek?  No. not makeup.  Sometimes the road to "in front of the lens" stardom is paved with hardwood floors that don't give when you bonk your face on them.  :-( the poor little one took a spill during her photos session, but, like a true professional she rose from the ashes (or was picked up off the hardwood floor) and finished the photo shoot without missing a beat. Really though, we are not overzealous photo parents that forced her to finish her pictures.  She actually had plenty of smiles left after her "incident"

Tonight, was once again Pizza making Night, which meant that Kylie was certain that she needed to stay up late to be a part of it.  I got her to sleep by 8 (with my chest puffed out like a proud peacock), only to have her wake up by 8:10. 8:30, 8:40, 9:00.... so much for mini "at home" date night.  The funny part is that she was talking (or squealing) up a storm when Nat and I went into the room to see her, but as soon as we picked her up and brought her to the kitchen she was quiet as a church mouse.  We thought, "maybe she's tired, lets put her back in bed"  the second she hit the sheets she started laughing, smiling, cooing, squealing, spitting.  That must have gone on for 20 minutes or more.  Moral of the story?  she just wanted to be laying in bed with Nat and I both in there with her.  she was ready for family party night.....she didn't last very long.  As I am typing this, her and Nat are sound asleep on the La-Z-Boy, just happy to be together.

more to come soon,
